
The Memo She Forwarded to Herself
The memo was about the new remote work policy, and it was three paragraphs long, and the third paragraph was the one that mattered, because the third paragraph said that employees who worked remotely more than three days per week would be required to forfeit their desk assignments and would be reclassified as mobile workers, which was a classification that came with a reduced benefits package and a lower salary and which was not, the memo carefully noted, a reduction but was instead a reclassification, which was the word the company used when it wanted to describe something that was, in every functional sense, a reduction, but that could not be called a reduction in writing, because the calling would have made it harder to implement, and because the implementation was what the memo was for.
She forwarded the memo to her personal email, which was a thing she did with all the memos that mattered, because the forwarding was a form of saving, and because the saving was the thing she had learned to do, in fifteen years of corporate life, which was to save everything, in the form of an email to herself, because the emails to herself were the only emails she could be certain she would have access to after she was let go, and because the letting go was the thing that corporate life prepared you for, in the specific way that it trained you to think about the documents you were creating, not as shared assets but as personal property, stored in personal accounts, retrievable after the retrieval of the access was no longer possible through normal means, and which the means was what she was always thinking about, in the forwarding, which was not paranoia. It was professionalism, of a specific and degraded kind, the professionalism of the person who has been through a layoffs and who knows that the documents on the company server are not hers, and that the documents in her personal email are, in some meaningful sense, the only documents she actually has.
The memo was forwarded at 4:47 PM on a Friday. She did not think about it again until the following Thursday, when she received a message from IT security asking her to explain why she had forwarded a confidential internal document to a personal email account. The message was polite. The message used the word engagement, as in, we would like to engage with you about this matter, which was the word the company used when it wanted to describe a conversation that was not voluntary, and which the not voluntary was what the word engagement concealed, in the way that all corporate language conceals the things it does not want to name, and which the not naming was what made the language effective, and which the effectiveness was what the company was optimizing for, in the memo, in the reclassification, in the word choice, in the engagement.
She met with IT security on Friday.
