The Door in the Sky

Deep in the mist-shrouded Qinglan Mountains, there existed a forgotten ancient town called Luo Xing. The townspeople had guarded a sacred well for generations—it was said the well led to another world, one built of star fragments, called the Star Sea Pavilion. For a thousand years, no one had truly returned from there, except for one descendant of the Lin family—the seventh generation, a quiet boy named Lin Yan who always wore a faded blue cloth shirt.

That spring, a rare meteor shower crossed the sky, dozens of crimson meteors falling on the southern slope of Qinglan Mountain, dyeing the entire range dark gold. The mayor gathered the townspeople to announce that this was a heavenly omen, something unprecedented was about to happen.

Lin Yan was twelve years old when he first entered the Star Sea Pavilion. He found a library of infinite books, each volume containing the life story of someone who had ever lived. He found books about his ancestors, about the mayor, about the girl who sold flowers at the corner.

And he found a book with his own name. The last page was blank.

That night, he wrote a single sentence in that book: “I want to see what happens next.”

When he closed the book and looked up, he was back in the real well room. But the sentence remained on his palm, branded into his skin, permanent and indelible.

He understood then. The Star Sea Pavilion didn’t show the future.

It wrote it.
